Acupuncture

Our staff includes Dr. Catherine Hageman, who is a certified veterinary acupuncturist and graduate of the acupuncture course sponsored by the American Academy of Veterinary Medical Acupuncture.

She can provide acupuncture to your pet as a supportive therapy to relieve pain or improve the management of almost any medical disorder, from heart disease to skin problems to diabetes.

Most animals barely notice the placement of the acupuncture needles, which are very tiny.  Once the needles are in place, many pets relax and sometimes even fall asleep.

The treatment plan depends upon the condition being treated and the patient’s response.  Pets are often treated once weekly for 3-5 weeks, then every 2 weeks to 6 months for chronic conditions.  Needles are left in place for 5 to 30 minutes at each treatment, and your pet is reevaluated for response at every visit.

Response also varies with each patient – some respond positively right after the first treatment, others respond after 3-6 treatments.  Rarely, an individual will show no change after acupuncture.  Finally, there are some cases in which a pet seems to deteriorate temporarily before improving – it is believed that this reaction is related to a rebalancing effect of the nervous system.
